Salvation Basics: Adoption

Adoption: From Slaves and Strangers to Sons

Salvation Basics – Week #6

Romans 8:12

1) Remember Our Carnal Dilemma.

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.” – Romans 8:12

“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.” – Ephesians 2:1

2) Recognize God’s Clear Distinction.

“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” – Romans 8:13

Galatians 5:19-23 (Works of the Flesh vs. Fruit of the Spirit)

3) Relent to God’s Choice Direction.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
– Romans 8:14

“Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness (or kindness) of God leads you to repentance?”
– Romans 2:4

“Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God…” – Ephesians 2:19

4) Receive God’s Caring Devotion.

“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.'” – Romans 8:15

“And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father!'” – Galatians 4:6

“And He (Jesus) said, ‘Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will’” – Mark 14:36

Abba = Daddy or Papa

5) Realize God’s Confirming Declaration.

“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God…”
– Romans 8:16

6) Rejoice in God’s Coming Domain.

“…and if children, then heirs – heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” – Romans 8:17-18

“Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”
– 2 Corinthians 1:21
